The ‘Morning After Pill’ or ‘Post-Coital Pill’ is to be used by women, to prevent an unwanted pregnancy after having unprotected sex.
This pill can be taken up to FIVE days (120 hours) after having unprotected sex, but the efficacy of the pill significantly decreases the longer you leave it. It recommended that after having unprotected sex, get the pill from a pharmacy ASAP, to increase the chances of preventing the unwanted pregnancy.
The Morning After Pill is:
- 95% effective within 24 hours of having sex
- 85% effective within 24-48 hours of having sex
- 58% effective within 48-72 hours of having sex
The Morning After Pill can be taken in conjunction with other forms of contraception especially if they fail to work, e.g. a condom splits or you forget to take your normal daily contraceptive pill.
How does the Emergency Contraceptive pill work?
The pill works by:
- Preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg.
- Thickens the mucus in the neck of the womb, making it difficult for sperm to penetrate into the womb and reach an egg.
- Thins the lining of the womb, making it difficult for an egg to latch on and grow.
