Emergency Contraceptive ‘The Morning After Pill’

The ‘Morning After Pill’ or ‘Post-Coital Pill’ is to be used by women, to prevent an unwanted pregnancy after having unprotected sex.

This pill can be taken up to FIVE days (120 hours) after having unprotected sex, but the efficacy of the pill significantly decreases the longer you leave it. It recommended that after having unprotected sex, get the pill from a pharmacy ASAP, to increase the chances of preventing the unwanted pregnancy.

The Morning After Pill is:

  • 95% effective within 24 hours of having sex
  • 85% effective within 24-48 hours of having sex
  • 58% effective within 48-72 hours of having sex

The Morning After Pill can be taken in conjunction with other forms of contraception especially if they fail to work, e.g. a condom splits or you forget to take your normal daily contraceptive pill.

How does the Emergency Contraceptive pill work?

The pill works by:

  • Preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg.
  • Thickens the mucus in the neck of the womb, making it difficult for sperm to penetrate into the womb and reach an egg.
  • Thins the lining of the womb, making it difficult for an egg to latch on and grow.

What types of Morning After Pill are there?

LevonelleThe most commonly used emergency contraceptive. This pill can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex and is available free of charge on prescription from your GP, or at Jaysons Pharmacy without a prescription (both Long Eaton and Wollaton branch)

ellaOneA newer form of Morning After Pill that can be taken up to Five days (120 hours) after Unprotected Sex. This is only available on prescriptions and not recommended for any women under the age of 18 years.

The emergency contraceptive pill is available free of charge from:

  • most sexual health clinics (sometimes referred to as genitourinary medicine or GUM clinics)
  • most young persons’ or Brook clinics
  • most NHS walk-in centres

Malaria Preventions

Holiday Season is just around the corner so we would like to get you thinking about Malaria and how you can prevent catching it.

Approximately 1,500 travellers return to the UK with malaria every year. In 2008, there were 1,370 cases of malaria reported and six deaths in the UK.

Malaria is a tropical disease spread by night-biting mosquitoes. When a mosquito infected with malaria parasites (plasmodia) bites you, it injects the parasites into your body. It only takes a single mosquito bite for you to become infected.

Symptoms can develop as quickly as eight days but, in some cases the parasites can stay inactive in the body and symptoms may not develop for up to a year.

Any type of malaria is dangerous but malaria caused by the falciparum parasite is the most serious. It can develop very rapidly and lead to severe illness and death.

When travelling to high-risk areas, be aware of the symptoms of malaria, such as fever. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any symptoms, even several months after your trip.

For more information about symptoms and causes of Malaria visit http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Malaria.

It’s not just grass and flowers that causes Hayfever, other plants cause people to suffer the symptoms such as, trees: Alder, Birch, Oak, Ash, Elm, Poplar, Hazel, Yew, Willow, and Pine, and other plants e.g. Mugwort, Rapeseed and Nettles. All of which release their pollen at different times of the year and peak at different times and different periods of time. An example of this is the Alder tree releases pollen from January – mid April and peaks between the end of February to mid April.

Treatment for Hay Fever is simple, but depends on your symptoms.

Many people take an Antihistamine, such as Cetirizine, Loratadine, or Chlorphenamine, which is available over the counter, and on our website www.jaysonspharmacy.com. All at great prices at under £2.

Others depending on their symptoms take different treatments, such as nasal sprays such as Beconase to relieve a blocked or congested nose with the Hay Fever, or eye drops such as Opticrom or Otrivine for itchy and irritated eyes.
